Introducing Beck Brow Alpaca Cria 2022 (some of them)
That’s it folks!
Our birthing season started on the 14th of April and came to an end on the 27th of July when Beck Brow Seventh Heaven and Limestone Red produced for us a black boy. Boys have certainly been the theme of 2022. Our final tally worked out at Females 38% and Males 62% but we have some great quality so no complaints. I hadn’t really thought about how many matings had been given to our coloured stud males last year until the cria started to arrive…brown….fawn….brown….fawn!!! Only 17% of our cria are white with 52% brown or mid-fawn. We certainly have an abundance of fawn boys looking like potential stud males. I have remembered to use the white boys more this year!
It’s been a straightforward year. We did have one premature (312 days) but he quickly did well (despite a leg fracture) and we had an amazing 412-days gestation. Beck Brow The Real Deal looked like he was a month old at one day old. Thankfully, we have had no failure of passive transfer and no cases of newborn sepsis.
Having got around to naming all the cria (I reserve the right to change any at registration :)) yesterday, I thought I would go out and photograph some of them in order to introduce them. Of course, when you go out with a purpose to get good images all you get is cria munching on grass! Our first group were cria sheared at the end of May and later born at the beginning of August (hence the very short fleece on some)

Apologies to all those cria I have missed. I have definely left out one of my favourites Beck Brow Light Up The Room (Dam: Morden Hall Honaria. Sire: Bozedown Blaze of Glory) but we look forward to seeing the fleeces grow back from cria shearing. No National Show team to pick this year as I am one of the Judges but there will be plenty of head scratching when choosing which fawn male will be making the other show teams!
