The Yorkshire Alpaca Group (YAG) Show

  Posted on   by   No comments

It was a bright and early start for us on Saturday, as we were off to the Yorkshire Alpaca Group (YAG) Show held at Thirsk. As I had agreed to do some inspections which commenced at 7 am, this meant we had to be loaded and away by 5 am. So we were rather bleary eyed when we left in the dark.

The show had attracted a large entry (140)and was judged by Cathy Lloyd and her apprentice judge Viv Darcy. We took seven alpacas and had a fantastic show, but more on that later. I though I would just reminisce a little first.

Judges

Our first YAG show was in 2009, it was our first year of breeding and only our second show. Paul and Robyn took our show team of two as I was down in Devon attending the BAS Foundation Course. I received a very excited call to report that Anzac Almost Illegal was placed 1st in his class and awarded Reserve Fawn Male Champion. Almost Illegal (Almo) was at the show again this year, now owned by Hillridge Alpacas in Suffolk, he was awarded 1st placed Mature Light Male.

We didn’t attend in 2010, so our next visit was in 2011. Looking through the show results brought back some rather sad memories of Beck Brow Paige Turner, who died suddenly of a ruptured aneurysm aged 18 months of age. Paige Turner, who we always called Poppet, was awarded Fawn Female Champion. This was the first year that we had shown our home bred alpacas and it was Beck Brow Explorer’s first and only outing to YAG, where he was awarded 1st Intermediate White Male and White Male Champion. Beck Brow Fine Romance (Roma) was awarded Reserve Champion White Female. I recall returning home very pleased with our results.

We didn’t attend again in 2012, but took a small show team of two in 2013. If fact it was a father and daughter team; Waradene St Patrick of EPC and Beck Brow Foxy Sox. We could not have been more delighted when St Patrick took Champion Fawn Male and Sox Champion Fawn Female…or that is what we thought…because we were even more delighted still, when St Patrick took Supreme Champion!

Although I am sure I have a photo of St Patrick in his ribbons, this photo always amuses me…the indignity of having ones manhood examined!

So having missed 2014 (no idea why we have alternated) back to 2015 with our seven young boys and girls (all intermediate) :

First up were our two Black Sabbath boys who were both in the same class

Beck Brow Prime Suspect 1st placed Intermediate Black male, Beck Brow Jimmy Choos 2nd.

Next it was Beck Brow Seventh Heaven (St Patrick) who was second and Reserve Champion Brown Female Champion Brown Female was awarded to Cockerham Pride who is sired by our black stud, Black sabbath.

Our fourth entry in the ring was Beck Brow Dixie Chick (St Patrick) who took Champion Fawn female. As we had only taken Intermediates we didn’t have a fawn male entry (Boxster who is an adult stayed home this time). However, we were delighted when Nero Black Bamboo (St Patrick) took Reserve Fawn Male Champion

That just left us with the whites. Beck Brow Trendsetter (Explorer) was awarded Champion White Female but how would we fair with the two white males, this is always a biggy for us. After a little perspiration on our part, Beck Brow Mr Darcy (Explorer) was awarded Champion White Male with Beck Brow Bond 007 (Goldmine) second in the same class.

Beck Brow Mr Darcy (Explorer) put the icing on the cake by taking Huacaya Supreme Champion and Best of British What a great day for us.

Actually what a great year. The progeny of Beck Brow Explorer, who had his first cria on the ground in 2013, have taken three Supreme Champions in 2015

We will enjoy the success while it lasts as we all know…another show, another day and another way:))
